Developing Actions on food waste.

ACTIONS

The Actions developed on food waste involve preventing it through better planning, rescuing surplus food for people, redistributing it, recycling scraps via composting or anaerobic digestion, and promoting systemic change through technology, policy, and public awareness campaigns, with key goals like the U.S. 2030 target to cut waste by 50%. Individuals can plan meals and use freezers; governments can offer loans and support infrastructure; and businesses can innovate with upcycling and tech.

Individual Actions (At Home)

Plan & Shop Smart: Meal plan, check existing stock, and use shopping lists to avoid overbuying.
Store Properly: Use your freezer to pause spoilage and understand date labels (best-by vs. use-by).
Get Creative: Designate "use-up" nights for leftovers and find new uses for scraps (e.g., freezing fruit for smoothies).
Compost: Turn inedible scraps into natural fertilizer to enrich soil and reduce landfill methane.

Community & Business Actions
Food Rescue: Volunteer with or support local organizations that collect and redistribute surplus food.
Support Sustainable Businesses: Patronize businesses with strong food waste practices.
Food Tech: Support startups developing solutions for preservation, sharing, and upcycling food.

Government & Systemic Actions
Support Farmers: Provide loans for on-farm storage (like USDA's Farm Storage Facility Loan program).
Policy: Implement policies that standardize date labels or restrict food from landfills, coupled with public education.
Awareness Campaigns: Run campaigns to change consumer behavior and value food more highly.

Key Organizations & Initiatives
ReFED (Rethink Food Waste in a Changing World): A non-profit focused on systemic solutions.
EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) https://www.epa.gov/sustainable-management-food/united-states-2030-food-loss-and-waste-reduction-goal: Leads U.S. efforts towards the 2030 goal.
WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme): Runs initiatives like Food Waste Action Week.
